Start Stop Continue is a technique for gathering lessons learned. Our troop uses it on campouts, meetings, just about any event we've done that we want to do better next time.
Start/Stop/Continue - Best of the Best!

START
- Using a trailer packing checklist to ensure essentials are packed
- Bringing enough water/ice to primitive locations
- Conducting uniform inspections prior to departure (Field & Activity)
- Wearing closed toed water shoes (NO bare feet!)
- Having more inter-patrol activities (fire starting, lashing, kickball, etc)
- Using ground tarps under tents (ALWAYS!)
- Choosing patrol sites further from each other
- Using patrol duty rosters, planning realistically & taking formation times seriously
- Making & posting a campout agenda for patrols to follow
- Setting up a 3 bucket cleaning station (crud scrape, hot water wash, clorox rinse)
- Using drying bags for individual mess kits
- Using reflective tape on patrol gear with scout names
- Having grubmasters give campout ASM the expense listing before departing Sun
- Having PL QM's assign gear to take home for cleaning
- Wearing watches (especially SPL & PL's)
- Being safer on campouts (ie, don't exceed capabilities!)
- Checking wagon tire air pressure
- Having a backup plan if campsite is closed
- having old PLC work closer with new PLC on first campout of the term
STOP:
- Forgetting Field Uniform
- Going barefoot and running in camp
- Wearing open toed shoes at troop events
- Bringing bottled water (use nalgene or similar)
- Littering (pickup after yourself!)
- Scheduling too much on campouts
- Using other scouts gear without their knowledge
- Distracting the driver on trips
- Horsing around in MB classes (pay attention!)
- bringing extra troop gear (chuckbox, cooler, popup, igloo - 1 per patrol)
- Violating local campsite rules (going on/near protected areas)
- Forgetting grub stuff in the fridge (sausage, juice, etc)
- Waiting to the last minute to cancel sign-ups
- Showing up late to campout SHOW TIMES
- Playing with sticks in the fire
- Waiting until Sunday to pack personal gear
- Losing patrol and personal gear
- Treating troop gear roughly
- Packing personal items loosely on packs
- Camping near interstates
- Using Site 2 at Kerr Lake!
CONTINUE:
- HAVING FUN!
- Good scout leadership!
- Having MB Classes
- Observing 2300 Quiet Time
- Doing group meals (one pot dinners)
- Packing personal gear on Sat evening
- having mini-PLC mtg a week prior and at trailer packing
- Sorting patrol gear quickly on Sun morning
- Doing campsite Service Project each campout
- Having a short skills class on each campout
- Bringing your books to get requirements signed off
- Bringing personal and/or patrol toilet paper!
- bringing individual mess kits with scouts responsible for their own gear
- Campfires with skits
- Backpack style lunches; eat on the trail
- Bringing canoes and camping near water (to include beach campouts)
- Experimenting with cooking (using dutch ovens, big frying pan, backpack stoves, etc)
- Playing sports and providing some down time/free time
- Making time for rank advancement (older scouts helping younger scouts!)
- Setting up camp before beginning activities
- Using water pump purifiers
- Using a duty roster, waking up on time and sharing duties
- Listening to your chain of command (PL and SPL instructions)
- Training others to pack trailer
- Hiking, letter boxing and geocaching
- Bringing and using the wagon
- Bringing hammocks or making them
- Setting up the axe yard with splitting wedge
- Using spray on sunscreen

Winter Start/Stop/Continue
Start:
- preparing better for cold weather camping (see "Sleeping Warm on T200 website)
- Bringing more wood on the darker/cooler campouts
- Bringing sleeping pads (warmer, dryer & softer than the ground)
- Being safer on campouts (ie, watch for hypothermia!)
Stop:
- Using tents WITHOUT the ground tarps
- Showing up late to campout SHOW TIMES
Continue:
- Preparing for weather (clothes, sleeping bags, etc for cold wx)
- Using hot water in nalgene bottles to keep sleeping bag warm
- Cold weather campouts
- Bringing multiple sleeping bags (fleece bag inside your lightweight bag)

Start/Stop/Continue - Eagle Projects!

Start
-taking count of workers at each schedule
-using T200 orange water jugs with ice & water to refill nalgenes
-having coffee for early adult leaders
-having all scouts engaged in working
-keep team leaders & scouts on task
-having a balanced amount of older scouts at each shift
-ensuring scouts are in proper uniform
-ensuring scouts bring required gear (gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc)
-survey the site & take measurements before hand
-seek counsel from technical advisor and/or Project SM
Stop
-having scouts stand around with nothing to do
-using plastic water bottles
-removing footwear & going in water unsupervised
-allowing scouts to use tools without a safety brief
Continue
-having fun & learning new skills in new locations!
-CALLING scouts to ensure a good turnout
-preplanning to identify potential problem areas
-scheduling activities and keeping to that schedule
-conducting sign-in and safety/overview brief
-innovative project designs
-having Scout is Reverent service
-keeping younger and older scouts balanced in groups
-tasty & "extravagant" lunches (chicken, BBQ, pizza, burgers!)
-good comms to ensure a great turnout
-having 2 shifts for both scouts and adult leaders
-tweaking plans if good ideas surface
-forging ahead to get ahead of schedule if things go smoother than expected!
-taking time to assess your project and re-direct team leads as required
